What Moved the Market This Week

Stocks extended their summer run for a third straight week, with the S&P 500 touching fresh record territory before easing back slightly on Friday. The catalyst was a pair of encouraging inflation reports: July’s consumer price data came in cooler than economists expected, and wholesale prices barely budged the next day. Together, the two reports reinforced hopes that the Federal Reserve can afford to stay patient on interest rates heading into its September meeting, which gave investors more confidence to keep buying.

That backdrop helped explain why the S and I Funds outpaced the large-cap C Fund this week. Smaller domestic companies and international stocks tend to benefit most when rate-cut expectations firm up, since both are more sensitive to borrowing costs than the mega-cap names that dominate the C Fund. Energy stocks also joined the rally as oil prices climbed on ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, adding a second leg of support beyond the usual technology and AI-related headlines. The F Fund’s small decline reflects that same rise in oil prices, which nudged bond yields higher over the week and weighed modestly on bond prices.

The week wasn’t without a note of caution. A preliminary August consumer sentiment reading came in weaker than expected on Friday, and retail sales data pointed to a somewhat softer consumer than the headline stock gains might suggest. For now, strong corporate earnings and easing inflation are outweighing those concerns, but it’s a dynamic worth watching as we move into the second half of the year. Next week brings retail earnings from Target and Walmart, with Nvidia’s highly anticipated report still a couple weeks out.
