TSP Week in Review: July 20–24, 2026

July 27, 2026 My Federal Retirement

It was a choppy week for TSP investors. A sharp tech and chip-stock sell-off on Thursday — driven by disappointing earnings reactions from Tesla and Alphabet along with renewed worries over AI-related capital spending — pulled the stock funds lower for the week, even after a partial recovery on Friday as oil prices pulled back Friday on reports of a possible diplomatic opening, even as fighting continued in the Middle East. The Nasdaq finished the week down roughly 2%, while the S&P 500 and Dow were closer to flat.

What Moved the TSP Funds This Week

The S Fund led the week’s declines among the core funds, down 0.92%, as small and mid-cap growth names bore the brunt of Thursday’s tech-driven sell-off — the worst single-day drop for major indexes since late June.

The C Fund held up somewhat better at -0.60%, reflecting the relative resilience of large-cap stocks compared with the more growth-heavy Nasdaq. The I Fund was essentially flat for the week (-0.10%), with a strong Tuesday largely offsetting Thursday’s losses — a reminder that international markets don’t always move in lockstep with U.S. tech.

On the fixed-income side, the F Fund slipped 0.73% as Treasury yields drifted higher through most of the week before easing slightly on Friday. The G Fund, as always, posted a small, steady gain (+0.09%), underscoring its role as the TSP’s only fund with no downside volatility.

The Lifecycle Funds moved in line with their stock exposure: L Income, which holds the least in stocks, was down just 0.11% for the week, while the longer-dated funds — L 2055 through L 2075, which hold the most in the C, S, and I Funds — fell closer to 0.46–0.47%. That gradient is by design: the further out a fund’s target date, the more its short-term swings will resemble the stock funds, and the closer to retirement, the more it behaves like a blend of G and F.
