CSRS Retirement Eligibility: Special Provisions
(Law Enforcement, Firefighters, Air Traffic Controllers)

If you work in a position that your agency has determined to be a law enforcement,  firefighting, or civilian air traffic controller position, you are covered under special provision rules of the CSRS retirement system.

There are two retirement types for special provision federal employees covered by the CSRS.

  • Optional (voluntary)
  • Mandatory

You must retire under special provisions for air traffic controllers or law enforcement and firefighter personnel. Air traffic controllers can also retire at any age with 25 years of service as a civilian air traffic controller.
