As an employee under the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS), you cannot use any unused sick leave balance at the time of retirement to extend the length of service for computing your retirement annuity.

However, FERS employees who voluntarily transferred to FERS from CSRS (with at least 5 years of creditable service) will be able to extend the length of service in the CSRS component of the annuity using any unused sick leave.  The lesser of these two sick leave balances is used:

• the sick leave blance when you transferred from CSRS to FERS, or

• the sick leave balance at the time you retire
